BBA Committees

BBA Committees offer excellent opportunities to connect and contribute. They are responsible for much of the work of the BBA. Committee preference request forms are available to members in September, and the President makes appointments to begin the following January.

Check out this report of Committee activities to date in 2018. 

 The Bulletin

The Bulletin Committee works to identify timely and relevant topics for articles in the BBA's quarterly magazine, the Birmingham Bar Bulletin. Committee members often draft articles for inclusion in the publication.

 Civil Court Procedures

The Civil Courts Procedures Committee acts as a liaison with Birmingham-area Civil Courts on topics and issues related to civil court practice.

Collaborative Law

The Collaborative Law Committee promotes understanding and use of the collaborative law process to resolve legal disputes.

 Continuing Legal Education

The Continuing Legal Education Committee prepares, develops and produces CLE programming throughout the year, helping to provide one of the Bar's most important member benefits. The Committee looks at emerging trends in the law to identify timely and relevant topics of interest to the BBA membership.

 Communications Committee

The Communications Committee works to enhance the image of the Bar and the legal profession through coordination with the media and other groups. It also identifies topical speakers as requested by outside entities.

 Community Education

The Community Education Committee promotes public education about the legal system through schools and community organizations. The Committee also plans and coordinates annual Law Day events for the Bar.

 Diversity/Inclusivity

The Diversity/Inclusivity Committee examines and identifies means through which the Bar can promote and encourage inclusivity within the legal profession;

 Elder Law

The Elder Law Services Committee examines developments in elder law, and develops legal-related programs to provide help and assistance to the elderly.

 Entertainment

The BBA Entertainment Committee is responsible for the Association's social functions, and coordinates the annual BBA Spring Picnic in June and the annual BBA Holiday Party in December.

 Family Law

The Family Law Committee identifies issues in the practice of family law and facilitates projects and programs to address these issues.
 

 Fee Arbitration

The Fee Arbitration Committee exists to arbitrate fee disputes between attorneys and their clients, and disputes between attorneys.

 Future Leaders Forum

The Future Leaders Forum Committee organizes the annual BBA Future Leaders Forum, which cultivates leaders from among a group of motivated attorneys who have been in practice for 3-8 years. Any Birmingham Bar member who will be in his or her 3rd-8th year of practice is invited to apply to the program, which runs from July through December each year.

 Grievance

The BBA Grievance Committee investigates and reports on complaints filed with the Alabama State Bar against Birmingham area attorneys.

 Immigration

The Immigration Committee provides substantive information on practice trends, fosters the practice of immigration law among the members, and serves as liaison with the rest of the bar and the public on immigration law-related issues.

 Judicial Liaison

The Judicial Liaison Committee serves as the Bar's chief liaison to members of the local, state and federal judiciary.

 Lifetime Achievement Award

The Lifetime Achievement Award Committee annually recognizes outstanding and distinguished members of the Bar.

 Long Range Planning

The Birmingham Bar Long Range Planning Committee prepares, introduces and monitors implementation of plans for the future of the Association.

 Medical Liaison

The Medical Liaison Committee works to improve the relationship between the BBA and various medical groups and organizations.

 Membership

The Membership Committee reviews and approves submission of applications for membership to the Executive Committee. It also explores and considers means to increase membership and Association value for members.

 Mentoring

The BBA Mentoring Committee is charged with evaluation and implementation of the Bar's Mentoring Program, which pairs newly-admitted lawyers with more seasoned lawyers for help in navigating the "real-world" practice of law.

 Nominating

The Nominating Committee develops a slate of nominees for elected office for the membership to vote on before each Annual meeting.

  Pro Bono

The Pro Bono Committee works in concert with the BBA Volunteer Lawyers Program to organize and implement an annual appreciation event for volunteers and donors during National Pro Bono Week.

 Public Service

The Public Service Committee coordinates various public service projects, including participation in Birmingham Reads and back-to-school supplies drives.

 Scholarship

The Scholarship Committee reviews and evaluates law school scholarship applications from area law schools, and makes recommendations to the Executive Committee for award.  Its mission is to promote the BBA memorial scholarships and to annually select the scholarship recipients based upon equal consideration of the following criteria:  financial need, community involvement, work experience, unique life experience, and academic record and potential.
