In 2020, Alabama passed legislation enabling the formation of benefit corporations, a legal form that allows for-profit businesses to institutionalize public benefits in their organizing documents and governance.  The law went into effect January 2021 and has been warmly received by businesses, nonprofits, and investors alike.  But what is a benefit corporation?  What are the benefits and potential drawbacks of organizing in this legal form?  What types of entities should consider organizing as benefit corporations?  And finally, how does one set up and operate as a benefit corporation?  We hope you will join us as we explore this new legal form.

Speakers are:

  • Jonathan Murphy, Fortif Law Partners LLC (Law)
  • Mark Bernstiel, Alabama Power Foundation (Philanthropy)
  • Patrick Murphy, University of Alabama at Birmingham (Investment & Talent)
  • Houston Smith, Alabama Power Company (Public Policy)
