Guest speaker is Representative Neil Rafferty of the Alabama Legislature. Scheduled discussion is as follows - - (5-7 min) Brief discussion of black civil rights movement and post WWII American landscape. Largely focusing on tactics and organizations of the black civil rights movement. This is because while the struggles were not the same, the women's rights and LGBTQ rights movements had their parallels, and the black civil rights movement laid the framework and blueprint for how to successfully move the needle.
- (5-7 min) Brief discussions on historical context of gender's role in education, women's suffrage, reproductive rights, and glass ceiling. Possible examples for context may include Wollstonecraft to Plath to Stowe and Morrison, suffrage movement and reproductive justice, sexual harassment (Anita Hill) and the glass ceiling (Nordic vs North America).
- (5-7 min) Brief discussion on LGBTQ history, post WWII, the gay bar/drag, criminalization and institutionalization of LGBTQ, the Stonewall Riots, AIDS Crisis, to DOMA/DADT/marriage equality. Possible examples will be Harvey Milk's speech, Allen Ginsberg's Howl, Bayard Rustin, Obama's "Evolution Speech".
- (30 min) The bulk of presentation (25-30 minutes) will be discussion on how these issues converged to the current politics surrounding gender identity, which are not black/white, red/blue as many probably believe them to be. While Rep Rafferty will have some data to highlight points on the modern phenomenon, this will largely have to be based on his own experience, anecdotes with the forces of proponents and opponents, their motivations, and the ultimate conjecture into "why"?
- (10-15 min) Q&A and further discussion, debate
Application pending approval by the Alabama State Bar MCLE Commission for 1.0 hour MCLE Credit. Registration fee - - Free for current members of the BBA Women Lawyers Section
- All others - $30.00 (payable by credit card)
Meeting link will be forwarded to registrants approximately 24 hours prior to the seminar.
