The Alabama Legislature in the last two sessions has passed reforms that
ease the impact of court fines and fees on justice-involved Alabamians. The
"Grace Period Bill," passed in 2022 provides a 180-day grace period
following release from incarceration before someone has to begin paying their
court debt. The "Drivers License Bill," passed in 2023 sharply
curtails the ability of judges to suspend drivers licenses for nonpayment of
fines and fees. Learn all the details and how to use these reforms to advocate
for economic justice for criminal court clients. This CLE will be presented by
Alabama Appleseed Center for Law & Justice, and will feature Appleseed's
Research Director Leah Nelson, and former Policy Director, Frederick Spight,
Jr., now a visiting professor at the UA School of Law. Free for BBA members; $20 for non-members 1 hour CLE credit Register by February 28, 2024
